Martin Hewlett, Warminster, Wiltshire

Part 1: Seed bed preparation and drilling (Late May 2020)

  • SCS supplied Mr Hewlett with APPIN Stubble Turnip seed
  • This Catch crop takes around 8 weeks from planting to grazing.
  • Appin is a grazing turnip which is mostly leaf, with a leaf to root ratio of 80/20 and is suitable for multi-grazing.

Early growth
Appin Stubble Turnips – early growth

Update: 10 July

Martin’s Turnips are growing well as shown below, but he has had a problem with Flea Beatle attacking part of his crop.

Where this damage was worst Martin has re–drilled with another Green Forage crop, Redstart, which is a Hybrid Brassica. This is quick-growing and will supplement the Appin Turnips in 6-10 weeks time. Things do not always go to plan!
